Political interference, self censorship and financial pressure on media outlets and journalists are serious problem in the Western Balkans. Journalists are often attacked or put under pressure by ruling parties and this is a trend that spreading to other parts of Europe.

Tim Judah, a correspondent for The Economist, believes that instead of the Balkans becoming “europeanised”, Europe, or at least parts of it, are becoming “balkanised”.
