Vlado Rafael
Writer and pedagogue
Vlado Rafael is a writer and pedagogue. He completed his doctoral studies at the Institute of Humanities of Comenius University in Bratislava under the leadership of Prof. Miron Zelina, the doyen of Slovak pedagogy. He worked at the Open Society Foundation in Bratislava for seven years as an expert consultant for education. He is the author and editor of several key studies and research works dedicated to problems of educational policy and the education of Romani children. He also called attention to the social status of the Roma in Slovakia after 1989 in his documentary films: Rómovia 25 rokov po… and Tvoj čas. He has lectured at the Institute of Romani Studies at the Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra and the Institute of Social Anthropology at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of Comenius University in Bratislava. In 2012 he founded the educational organisation entitled eduRoma and serves as its director. In May 2016 he received the Human Rights Defender Award from the American Embassy in Bratislava.
